My mom gets those, and they're horrible. She did discover (actually I googled and found some tips) that jumping up and down on one foot helps quite a bit, for as long as you can keep it up, anyway. Not perfect, but if another stone develops it can bring some relief for a bit. I also found her some supplements online that she ordered and they also seem to help quite a bit.
I hope he doesn't ever get another, but they do seem to recur.
